“This job has been given me to do. Therefore, it is a GIFT. Therefore, it is a PRIVILEGE. Therefore, it is an OFFERING I may make to God. Therefore, it is to be done gladly if it is to be done FOR HIM. Here, not somewhere else, I may learn God’s way. In this job, not some other, God looks for FAITHFULNESS” – Elizabeth Elliot (emphasis mine)
What job have you been given to do? Is it some great burden you have been given by the Lord? Perhaps it is something you never asked for, and yet you find yourself bearing it daily. Maybe it is a calling that you have longed for, finally come to fruition. Do you struggle under its weight, wondering how you will make it through the day? Does the weight of it seem but a joy to you as you walk the path the Lord has set before you?
Sometimes our hearts long to have a clear cut job or something we could easily put a label on. Our “job” feels like it encompasses far too many things. I want to remind you that each task you complete, each little thing you do that makes up your day, is a task to glorify our Maker. You can choose to do that task for the Lord, and He will be honored by your work no matter how large or small the task. It is a privilege to do this work for Him, no matter the capacity or setting you’re doing it in. He has called you to this place for a reason, and He asks you to do it for Him.
Whether your job today is washing the dishes for a millionth time, tackling the mountain of laundry, billing one more customer, greeting the patient with a smile, or simply taking the time you need to rest, do it as an offering to our Maker. He delights in your praises, in your little jobs given up as sacrifices before Him. (So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God. -1 Corinthians 10:31) Do it for HIS glory, not for your own benefit or praise.
Our Heavenly Father has appointed you to do this task for a reason, and He does not make mistakes. He is glorified through you doing your task when you do it for Him. He knows you, your struggles, your shortcomings and gifts, and He has called you here, to this job for a reason. We have such a mighty privilege to serve our Creator through our daily jobs, throughout the ins and outs of our lives. He knows our hearts and He sees our joy or pain as we go through our day. Yet He still asks for our hearts, and our faithfulness. He is most glorified when we choose to honor Him, even when we feel unworthy.
So whether you are a woman in the throes of motherhood, a teacher molding little minds, a secretary calling customers, a cook serving dishes, or a nurse tending patients – no matter your position or situation – you have been called to this task for a reason. Glorify the Master who called you and do this job before you with joy and thanksgiving. Do it as an offering of sacrifice and praise to HIM. He is faithful to supply your every need.
